The Photographer's Personal Ponderings 4: Light

Wow, okay.

Light.

Light is one of the most abundant and least understood elements of our world. We know a lot about how to manipulate and harness light, but little when it comes to what light is and how far we can push it to accomplish our goals. Regardless of what light is or how it can be used, light is the photographer's sustenance.

Whether we're talking about mood, shutter speed, film speed, or aperture settings, light is the topic of the hour. When you get into the deeper levels of photography and start to understand what is fast or slow, what is opened or closed, you realize that the Sun emits so much more light than anything man-made.

Isn't that the way it is though? The Son, God's Son Jesus, radiates with so much light that our efforts seem abnormally dim. In places that lack the Lord's light it is difficult to capture a person's heart and focus. With our own little lights it is impossible, but with Jesus' light through us our immediate area becomes more visible. As the Son dawns there everything starts to clear and the muck hides, leeching into darkness.

Someday the entire universe will be bathed in the Son's light and all that is vile will have nowhere to hide. Mmmm... what a wonderful day that will be.

Photo Stories: Rustling in the Breeze

A shaft of dormant grass wafts in the breeze.

More from November 15, 2008. I told you it was a good day. Anyway, this photograph was also taken while I was on my way to the location I wanted to be at. Oddly enough I got more keeper shots to and from the location than I got on location, oh well. On the left hand side of the image you can make out a blurry balckish-brown blob. That was some kind of prickly seed pod and others like it had this poor patch of grass surrounded. I like to lay down while I shoot to get the right angle, but those prickly pods prevented that. I remember my legs burning as I sat crouched on my haunches, waiting for that blade of grass to quit swaying in the breeze. This image is also uncropped.

The Photographer's Personal Ponderings 3: Time

What is time.

        Time is created.
                Time is decay.
                           Time is ending.
                                 Time is cruel.
                                     Time is healing.
                                         Time is grace.
Time is an eraser of memories.
                                  Time is nostalgic.
                              Time is repetitive.
                      Time is money.
            Time is trivial.
    Time is life.
Time is dying.
         Time is measurable.
                        Time is without limits.
Time is...

... Something I don't have a lot of. I have many things I want to do, but not the time or the strength to do them all at once. Sometimes I don't do anything for everything I have on my list to do. When I am doing well a lot gets done. When I am not little gets done. Whatever gets done, there is always more to do even if I don't feel like doing it. Doing too much isn't good for one's health, but neither is doing to little. No matter, with God's help I can do just the right things.

I hope you can understand this loose collection of thoughts. Oh, and just one more thing...

Thyme is good!

Photo Stories: A Cheerful Friend

Title: A Cheerful Friend
This little yellow flower is quite happy to see you.
This photograph comes from November 15, 2008. I found the little yellow flower in a sea of pasture grass, took a couple of shots and decided from the camera's preview screen that I couldn't get the right angle for a good picture. It wasn't until I was picking through the photos later that I noticed how nice the composition ended up. Unlike many of my pics, this one wasn't cropped at all; what you see is what I took. Anyway, this is the only plant of its type I saw on my trek that day, but I don't remember this part as well as I remembered others. I do know this was on my way out to the main destination.

Photo Stories: Serene Deceit

Title: Serene Deceit
A tiny poison ivy plant stands tall in the warming sun.
This is a new photograph for you all, but for me it is another fond memory. I wouldn't have remembered the exact capture date of Nov. 15 2008 without my software's excellent organization, but I remember that day. I took a large number of nice pictures that day. The sky was good, the light was good, and I was on my friend's expansive real estate to take photos. The photo in the post before this one was also taken that day.

Above is a tiny poison ivy plant about 2"(5cm) or so high. The proud plant was sprouting from a shallow dirt spillway on a boulder. The surrounding plant life seemed to be keeping its distance, allowing this incredibly brave or foolish plant plenty of room to grow. I don't recall tracing this path over again yet, but I have a feeling this infamous little plant was probably washed away shortly after my lens captured this image.

I didn't dare touch it despite its meager proportions.
